  • Public and political pressure mounts on President Tinubu to reinstate Fubara and lawmakers
  • No confirmation yet on reinstatement despite lobbying and growing protests

Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara used Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12, 2025, to reaffirm his commitment to the rule of law, fundamental human rights, and inclusive democratic governance.

His address comes as political tension continues to simmer in the state, following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, amid a prolonged political crisis.

The crisis, which also led to the suspension of Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu and members of the state assembly, was triggered by a power tussle between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The fallout resulted in the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Fubara called for unity and cross-party collaboration to sustain Nigeria’s 26-year democratic journey. He vowed to maintain an inclusive, transparent, and accountable administration while strengthening security across the state.

Amid growing calls for reinstatement, several groups, including the Ijaw Youth Council and a Rivers State Youth Coalition, have urged President Tinubu to reverse the suspensions, calling the move unconstitutional and a threat to democratic principles.

Social media commentary suggests former President Goodluck Jonathan may be lobbying for Fubara’s return, reportedly engaging in behind-the-scenes efforts with Tinubu. However, as of June 12, there is no official confirmation of Fubara’s reinstatement.

Protests have continued, with women from Opobo Kingdom and other supporters demanding an end to emergency rule and the restoration of constitutional order.

Despite earlier signs of compromise following a London meeting between Fubara and Tinubu in April, the political impasse remains unresolved.
