Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has summoned the acting CEO of the newly established Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following a viral video allegedly showing him handing cash—reportedly in US dollars—to evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, also known as Nana Agradaa.

The footage, which appears to capture a private exchange between the official and the controversial religious figure, has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the ethical standards expected of public officeholders, prompting calls for an investigation.

While the motive behind the cash handover remains unclear, the image of a senior government figure giving money to Nana Agradaa has fueled speculation and public backlash.

Now widely circulated on social media, the video is seen by critics as potentially undermining President John Dramani Mahama’s newly launched Code of Conduct for Public Officials—a key pillar of the government’s anti-corruption agenda, which promotes integrity, transparency, and accountability.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, 11 May, Gyamfi issued a public apology, calling his action an “unfortunate act of indiscretion.” He said the gesture was intended to assist the needy but was regrettably made public.

According to local media, the Chief of Staff’s summons aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Minority Members of Parliament have condemned Gyamfi’s actions. “Sammy Gyamfi’s action is not only fiscally reckless but also a betrayal of public trust and a slap in the face of millions of Ghanaians battling inflation and the rising cost of living,” they said.

“This behaviour is unacceptable and undermines the credibility of the Gold Board. We demand transparency and accountability in all government institutions,” they added.

Social media users have echoed the outrage, with many calling for Gyamfi’s resignation. One user tweeted, “It’s disappointing to see public officials engaging in such conduct. We need leaders who prioritise the country’s well-being, not personal interests.”

Sources say the Chief of Staff is handling the matter with urgency, given its political sensitivity and potential reputational damage.
