Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has granted state pardon to 73 inmates in correctional centres across the state, exercising his constitutional powers under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The governor announced the decision on Friday during a ceremony marking the release of the beneficiaries.

Governor Mohammed said the prerogative of mercy is a constitutional responsibility guided by compassion, justice, and fairness, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

He explained that the decision followed careful consideration and recommendations by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

As part of efforts to support their reintegration into society, the governor approved the sum of ₦100,000 for each of the beneficiaries.

In his remarks, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hassan Elyakub, disclosed that Governor Mohammed also released ₦3.8 million to offset fines and compensation for inmates whose sentences included monetary penalties.

He also called on the judiciary to consider non-custodial measures, such as community service, particularly for minor offences.

Meanwhile, the Controller of the Nigeria Correctional Service in Bauchi State, Tade Monday, alongside religious leaders, commended the governor for what they described as a humanitarian gesture.

They also advised the freed inmates to remain law-abiding and contribute positively to society.
