Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has officially launched Taraba Seeds Limited, a strategic initiative aimed at revolutionising seed development and distribution to boost agricultural productivity and strengthen food security in Nigeria.
The new company is designed to expand farmers’ access to high-quality, certified, and climate-resilient seeds, positioning Taraba State as a leading centre for agricultural innovation. Taraba Seeds Ltd will serve not only farmers within the state but also across the country.
Speaking at the launch, the Founding Chairman, Prasad Karumanchi, explained that the company will focus on the multiplication, processing, and distribution of improved seed varieties tailored to Nigeria’s diverse agro-ecological zones.
“The company will begin with, but is not limited to, key crops such as rice, maize, cowpea, and sorghum,” Karumanchi stated, stressing the firm’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of farmers.
Taraba State Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Nicholas Namessan, described the project as a major boost for the state’s economy. He noted that the initiative is expected to generate employment, attract agribusiness investments, and improve incomes for smallholder farmers.
Agricultural experts have hailed the launch as a timely and strategic intervention that aligns with national efforts to modernise farming practices and increase domestic food production.
By bridging the gap between research institutions and farmers, Taraba Seeds Ltd aims to accelerate the adoption of improved seed technologies, translating scientific innovations into higher yields and better livelihoods.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Dr. Dileepkumar Guntuku, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to quality assurance and strategic collaboration.
“We will work closely with research institutions, regulatory agencies, and private sector partners to ensure seed quality, certification, and widespread availability ahead of major planting seasons,” he assured.
Chairman of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), Hon. Tanko Bobbo, highlighted the impressive yield potential of the improved seeds, revealing that adoption trials recorded up to 12 tonnes per hectare. He described the varieties as “miracle rice seeds” capable of transforming rice production in the country.
Governor Kefas described the launch as a landmark achievement for Taraba State and Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
“With the establishment of Taraba Seeds Ltd., Taraba State is positioning itself at the forefront of Nigeria’s agricultural transformation—laying the foundation for a seed revolution that promises stronger harvests, improved livelihoods, and greater national food resilience,” the Governor said.
With strong government support, private sector leadership, and increasing farmer participation, Taraba Seeds Ltd is set to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable food production and ensuring long-term agricultural prosperity in Nigeria.
