Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance for workers in the state and local government service, as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs.
The governor made the announcement on Monday during the YEAP-SAFER support disbursement and stakeholder engagement programme, held in collaboration with First City Monument Bank (FCMB) and Mastercard at the Fashola Agribusiness Hub.
“I’m happy to announce that all workers in Oyo State and the local government, starting from April, at least for the first three months, maybe it will be extended, will be given ₦10,000 additional as petrol/transportation support,” Governor Makinde said.
The governor explained that the intervention would apply to workers across both the state and local government levels, noting that the measure is aimed at easing the burden of rising transportation costs on workers.
He added that the support would be implemented as a uniform benefit for all categories of workers, regardless of grade level.
“Everybody, all workers, it is a flat rate,” he stated.
The intervention comes amid a sustained rise in fuel prices across the country, which has significantly increased transportation costs and worsened the cost of living. In Ibadan, the price of petrol currently sells for over ₦1,330 per litre, with transport fares rising sharply, exceeding 100 per cent on some routes and over 50 per cent on others.
Makinde noted that the allowance will take effect from April. The move is expected to provide temporary relief for workers grappling with the economic strain caused by inflation and rising energy costs.
