In a widely circulated video, Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives for Aba North and South under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is seen allegedly assaulting an e-hailing driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, who was delivering a package to his residence in Maitama, Abuja.

The video, which shows Ikwechegh visibly angry, records him repeatedly slapping and insulting the driver for asking him to come outside to collect the delivery—a package containing snails. Claiming the request was disrespectful to his social status, Ikwechegh is heard threatening the driver, stating, “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria, and nothing will happen.” He allegedly warned Abuwatseya that he would personally “tie [him] up” and “put [him] in [his] generator house.”

When the driver asked for his delivery fee, Ikwechegh reportedly slapped him multiple times, emphasizing his position and declaring, “Do you know who I am? My name is Honourable Alex Ikwechegh; tell them I slapped you.” The incident has raised questions about his conduct and generated widespread public condemnation on social media.

Ikwechegh has recently been in the spotlight after the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia removed Emeka Nnamani of the Labour Party and ordered that Ikwechegh receive the certificate of return for the Aba North and South seat. This decision followed a previous ruling citing Nnamani’s alleged certificate forgery, an accusation Nnamani has denied.

Ikwechegh’s alleged actions in this recent incident have further intensified scrutiny around him, drawing attention from political and social spheres nationwide.
