In a heartfelt address at the 1st Raymond Dokpesi Annual Diamond Lecture in Abuja, former President Goodluck Jonathan recounted the emotional struggle he faced after losing the 2015 presidential election, describing it as one of the most challenging moments in his political career. The former president, who ran on the Peoples Democratic Party platform, lost to Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress candidate and former military leader, who secured 15,424,921 votes against Jonathan’s 12,853,162. The outcome marked a historic moment, as Jonathan became Nigeria’s first incumbent president to lose re-election. Jonathan, with a smile on his face, acknowledged the emotional toll, calling it an “inexplicable torment.”

Jonathan also praised the late Raymond Dokpesi, founder of Daar Communications, for providing him with critical support and guidance during that difficult time. He shared how Dokpesi encouraged him to “look beyond the election” and commended his fatherly advice as a stabilizing force that eased his transition into private life. “Dokpesi congratulated me and advised me to remain hopeful. It was not just about the transition ahead but also my journey forward as a private citizen,” Jonathan recalled. He noted that he had elaborated on this chapter in his book, My Transition Hours.

In a speech preceding Jonathan’s address, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Idris Mohammed, underscored the importance of responsible speech. Praising Dokpesi’s legacy as a patriot and influential media figure, Mohammed encouraged Nigerians to practice a balanced perspective. He warned against the dangers of “reckless negativity” and urged the media to continue promoting nation-building in the spirit of Dokpesi’s example.

Dokpesi, a revered media icon and founder of DAAR Communications, passed away on May 29, 2023. DAAR Communications’ Managing Director, Tony Akiotu, reported that Dokpesi had been unwell in the weeks leading up to his death and tragically fell during a routine gym session.
