Abuja, Nigeria
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has reassured Nigerians of the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguarding lives and property amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their potential global consequences.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police chief said Nigeria remains stable, with its internal security situation firmly under control. He, however, noted that the Force has strengthened proactive and intelligence-led policing strategies nationwide to forestall any possible spillover effects.
Disu directed Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to intensify surveillance and intelligence gathering, especially in the North West, North East and North Central zones. He also ordered enhanced collaboration with traditional and religious leaders, increased visibility policing around worship centres and other public spaces, and swift action against any individual or group seeking to exploit global developments to incite unrest or sectarian tension.
The IGP stressed that Nigeria would not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts, warning that attempts to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country would be met with the full weight of the law.
He urged community leaders to continue promoting peaceful coexistence and called on citizens to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding. Nigerians were also encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police formation.
The Police reaffirmed their readiness and resolve to maintain national security and ensure the safety of all citizens.
