Abuja, Nigeria
Barely a week to the closure of the January transfer window, Chelsea announced the signing of Yisa Alao from Sheffield Wednesday. The Blues disclosed this in a post on their website ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with Napoli on Wednesday.
Chelsea’s statement partly read: “Welcome to Chelsea, Yisa,”
Alao, who plays as a left-back, agreed a contract with Chelsea until 2028. The 17-year-old came through Sheffield Wednesday’s academy and made his senior debut for the Owls last August.
Alao is understood to have joined Chelsea for an initial fee of just over £500,000, but add-ons are expected to take the fee to around double that if the terms are met.
Chelsea were able to pull off the signing despite stiff competition for Alao’s signature, with Manchester United having also held talks to try to sign him and Liverpool also interested in the teenager.
