The West African College of Physicians has called on medical professionals across the region to resist the urge to migrate and instead remain committed to strengthening healthcare systems in West Africa. This appeal was made by the outgoing President of the College, Dr. Rose Macauley, during the 48th Annual General Scientific Meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

At the event, Dr. Macauley inducted new honorary fellows and members into the College, encouraging them to prioritize local healthcare contributions. “We urge you to stay in your country and contribute to the development of West Africa’s health sector,” Macauley stated, emphasizing the College’s core values of societal commitment and service.

Dr. Macauley also appealed to governments across West Africa to implement measures that would create a conducive environment for healthcare professionals, especially younger doctors. She highlighted the importance of addressing their needs and equipping hospitals adequately, saying, “An enabling environment is essential to keep doctors within our borders and allow them to practice effectively.”

The incoming President, Dr. Mamadou Mourtalla, further underscored the urgency of tackling brain drain in the health sector. He noted that while Africa boasts a substantial number of skilled doctors, many are leaving to work in countries that did not invest in their training. “To retain these dedicated young doctors, we must address their challenges and create pathways for them to contribute meaningfully within Africa,” Mourtalla asserted.

Both leaders stressed that proactive governmental action is key to addressing these challenges and keeping healthcare talent within the region.
