Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government announced today that principals of public secondary schools across Education District II have been urged to improve academic performance and strengthen school security. The charge was delivered by the Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary of the district, Mr Omotayo Layemo Sanni, during a strategic meeting aimed at boosting student results and ensuring safer school environments.

Sanni said the meeting was necessary to raise standards in external examinations, particularly WAEC and BECE, and to develop strategies for sustained academic improvement. While commending principals for past achievements, he encouraged them to set higher goals and build on existing successes.

He stressed the importance of collaboration with stakeholders, including parents, alumni, and community leaders, as essential for achieving improved student outcomes.

On school security, the Tutor-General expressed concern about rising insecurity in schools and revealed that the state government plans to recruit security personnel. He advised principals to engage community leaders in recommending trustworthy candidates for these positions.

Sanni also praised schools for their achievements in state and national competitions and encouraged principals to promote extracurricular activities to ensure all-round student development.

The meeting included discussions on strategies for improving performance in WAEC and BECE examinations. Principals from top performing schools shared best practices, including mentorship, cultivating a reading culture, and targeted teaching methods.

Other topics addressed included effective school administration and general management practices. Mrs Mojisola Adeyemi-Fashola, Director of Administration and Human Resources, explained procedures for staff appraisal and data reporting to government agencies. Representatives of insurance brokers also briefed principals on proper engagement and best practices for managing insurance of school property and lives.

The meeting concluded with renewed commitments from principals to work collaboratively to improve academic standards, ensure safer schools, and strengthen administration across Education District II.
