Lagos Environmental Task Force Arrests 26 in Orile Under Bridge Raid, Dismantles Illegal Structures Along Coastal Road

Lagos, Nigeria- Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, announced today that the Environmental Task Force carried out an enforcement operation yesterday at about 2:45 p.m. at the Orile Under Bridge, following reports that some individuals had taken control of the area and were extorting cart pushers who disposed of refuse there illegally.

Mr. Tokunbo Wahab disclosed that 26 suspects were arrested during the raid.According to the Commissioner, some of those apprehended admitted to collecting money from cart pushers in exchange for allowing indiscriminate dumping of waste. He added that the suspects have been taken into custody for further investigation and necessary legal action.

The Commissioner further stated that in a separate operation conducted yesterday at about 8:00 a.m., agency operatives continued the ongoing clean up exercise along the Coastal Road.

Mr. Tokunbo Wahab explained that enforcement officers discovered that certain individuals had unlawfully converted parts of the road setback into makeshift dwellings by erecting wooden sheds and occupying the corridor without authorization.

He also noted that the illegal structures were dismantled, and items stored along the roadside were removed as part of the operation.

The Commissioner emphasized that the State Government would not allow public infrastructure to be used for illegal activities and affirmed that enforcement efforts would remain consistent across Lagos State.
