Lagos, Nigeria- The Lagos State Government announced today the launch of the Ikosi Fruit Market Biodigester Plant, a facility that converts organic waste into energy in partnership with C40 Cities.
According to the Lagos State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, said the facility will produce biogas for electricity and cooking, while the fertiliser generated will be returned to local farmers to improve soil quality.
The plant will systematically collect organic waste from the market and process it in an anaerobic digester, the Lagos State Government stated.
The Lagos State Government added that the initiative demonstrates circular economy principles, reducing emissions, improving livelihoods, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Mr. Anthony Okoth, Regional Director for Africa at C40 Cities, praised the project for supporting practical climate action, the Lagos State Government reported.
The Lagos State Government noted that Princess Abolanle Bada, Chairman of Ikosi Isheri LCDA, represented by Vice Chairman Hon. Olayinka Ogunleye, said the plant will improve sanitation, empower traders, and strengthen the local economy.
