Ibadan, Nigeria — A man reportedly fell from one of the upper floors of the iconic Cocoa House in the Dugbe area of Ibadan, Oyo State, in the early hours of Monday, June 2, 2025. The incident, which occurred around 8 a.m., caused shock and confusion among early morning commuters and workers in the area.
In an official statement released later that day, Odu’a Investment Company Limited, the company managing Cocoa House, confirmed the incident. The firm’s Head of Branding and Communication, Victor Ayetoro, stated that the individual involved was quickly attended to by an emergency response team and taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for immediate medical attention.
The company expressed deep concern and assured the public of its full cooperation with authorities investigating the matter.
“Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the statement read.
Eyewitness accounts have added dramatic detail to the incident. Mr. Bolaji, a phone repair technician whose shop is located near the Post Office close to Cocoa House, described the moment as surreal.
“When the incident happened, I initially thought it was a large bird falling from the sky,” he said. “It was only when the person landed that I realized it was a human being. I had my phone with me, but I couldn’t even record anything because I was completely shocked.”
He added that the man first struck a roof near the building’s security post before hitting the ground, calling it “a terrifying sight.”
The security post reported to be the first point of contact before the falling man hit the ground.
While some observers speculated the man may have been working at the building or may have jumped intentionally, there is no official confirmation yet regarding the circumstances of the fall. As of now, the man’s identity, condition, and the precise cause of the incident remain unknown.
The situation has triggered wider discussions about safety protocols at high-rise buildings and the importance of mental health support in urban environments and authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway.
Residents and business owners in the area continue to await updates as Ibadan grapples with the shock of the event and the questions it raises.
