A suspected thief was beaten to death on Wednesday near the Modern Market area in Makurdi, Benue State, following an alleged attempt to steal from a local church.
According to witnesses interviewed by AfrikTimes Online, the suspect, along with two accomplices, reportedly broke into a church office, stole valuables, and tried to escape. Nearby residents noticed the suspects fleeing, chased after them, and managed to apprehend one, while the other two escaped.
A resident explained, “Robbers have been troubling us here for some time. While I was returning from work, a young woman on her way to the church mentioned seeing three young men entering it. She later raised the alarm, which caught the attention of neighbors. We saw the suspects trying to run.”
While two of the suspects got away, one was caught and fatally attacked by the crowd.
The police later arrived at the scene to remove the suspect’s body. Assistant Public Relations Officer for the State Command, Harry Ekwo, confirmed the incident, stating that while the body had been taken to a morgue, no formal complaint of a church robbery had been filed.
