The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has alerted healthcare workers and the public to a suspected revalidated batch of SMA Gold First Infant Milk Formula (900g) discovered on sale in Kaduna State, Nigeria.

In a post on its official X handle on Sunday, February 22, the agency said examination revealed clear evidence of date manipulation on the product. It stated that the manufacturing and expiry dates printed on a sticker were inconsistent with the original dates beneath it, confirming tampering.

“Physical examination of the complaint product sample revealed clear indicators of date marking alteration. The manufacturing and expiry date on the top preprinted sticker was inconsistent with the underlying, originally printed version. This confirms the suspicion of revalidation and tampering,” the statement noted.

The agency added that the product has been allegedly linked to gastrointestinal distress in a four-month-old infant after consumption and warned that the use of such compromised products could lead to serious health complications.

NAFDAC urged healthcare professionals and consumers to report suspected cases of substandard or falsified regulated products, as well as adverse or side reactions, through its nearest office, the toll-free line 0800-162-3322, email (sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng), or the e-reporting platforms on its website.

Meanwhile, in a separate operation in Lagos, the agency has announced that it has uncovered a warehouse stocked with banned, fake and unregistered cosmetic products valued at over ₦3 billion at the APT Trade Fair Complex.

According to the agency, the facility was hidden within an uncompleted building. Items recovered include 728 cartons of Crusader soap, 718 cartons of E45 soap and Extract Gold whitening soaps.

“Additional items such as assorted perfumes, body oils, and cooking oils were also found and placed on hold for further regulatory assessment. All seized products have been evacuated to prevent distribution,” the agency noted.

NAFDAC said the warehouse manager had been taken in for questioning and warned that the sale and use of fake products pose serious health risks.

The agency advised the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
