The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, has reiterated the commitment of the legislature to policies and partnerships that will enhance access to quality education, following a courtesy visit by officials of the National Examinations Council (NECO) to his office.
The NECO delegation, led by the Oyo State Coordinator, Mr. Ademola B. Adesola, held discussions with the Speaker on strategies to create broader academic opportunities for students in the state.
Disclosing this on his X handle, Ogundoyin noted that the council stressed the need for pupils in public primary schools to sit not only for the State Common Entrance Examination but also for the Unified National Common Entrance Examination conducted by NECO to enable them to benefit from national scholarships and gain admission into Federal Unity Colleges.
According to him, the team also encouraged JSS3 students to complement the State Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with NECO’s examination to widen their academic exposure.
The Speaker added that the meeting considered the resuscitation of the state government’s support in the payment of NECO fees for SSS3 students in public schools, noting that the intervention would ensure that financial challenges do not prevent candidates from sitting for the examination.
He further revealed that talks were held on the allocation of land in Ibadan for the construction of a NECO zonal office to strengthen the council’s institutional presence and improve service delivery in the region.
“As a House, we remain committed to policies and partnerships that will expand access, equity and excellence in our education sector for the overall development of our dear state,” he said.
