The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has inaugurated and inspected a series of key development projects across Gombe State, reinforcing efforts to improve healthcare delivery, education, and social welfare in the region.
The projects were commissioned during the weekend by the Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Ahmed, who led a high-powered delegation to various locations across the state to assess the interventions.
Among the major facilities unveiled was a newly constructed 40-bed maternity ward at Bogo Quarters in Akko Local Government Area. The facility is equipped with delivery rooms, antenatal and postnatal wards, a theatre, and a dispensary, and is expected to significantly enhance maternal and child healthcare services.
The commission also inaugurated a modern Central Medical Stores complex designed to strengthen the management and distribution of medical supplies. The facility features cold rooms, sorting areas, offloading bays, and administrative offices aimed at improving efficiency in the state’s health system.
In the education sector, NEDC commissioned four newly built lecture halls at Gombe State University, each with a seating capacity of 150 students. The intervention is expected to ease congestion and improve the learning environment for students.
At Government Secondary School, Malam Sidi in Kwami Local Government Area, the delegation inspected the rehabilitation of 19 classroom blocks, an administrative block, a 250-capacity examination hall, student hostels, laboratories, staff quarters, a library, dining facilities, perimeter fencing, and a gatehouse.
Similar upgrades were carried out at Ahmadu Gombe Secondary School in Gombe Local Government Area, including new classrooms, laboratories, skills acquisition centres, examination halls, and accommodation facilities.
The health sector also received major boosts with the inspection of projects at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe. These include an MRI housing facility, a 180-bed student hostel, an ENT complex, and a fully equipped trauma centre aimed at improving specialized medical services.
Commending the initiatives, Minister Uba Ahmed expressed satisfaction with the performance of the commission, noting that any challenges encountered were minor and related mainly to project timing and delivery.
Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Manassah Jatau, appreciated the Federal Government and NEDC for the interventions, describing the projects as timely and impactful for the state’s development.
A community leader, Ahmadu Waziri, also lauded the commission for its commitment to critical sectors, saying the projects would greatly enhance socio-economic growth in Gombe State.
“The commission has done well and continues to do well. What we have seen so far is commendable and beneficial to our people,” he said.
