The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of Ghana on the occasion of the country’s 69th Independence Anniversary.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, extended warm felicitations to his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as Ghana marks the historic milestone.

Ghana gained independence on March 6, 1957, becoming the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to break free from colonial rule. According to the statement, the achievement marked a defining moment in Africa’s liberation movement and inspired many nations, including Nigeria, to pursue sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination.

The ministry noted that Nigeria and Ghana share longstanding relations rooted in common historical experiences, cultural ties, and a shared vision for peace, prosperity, and African unity. Both countries, it added, have remained pillars of democratic progress and stability in West Africa.

It further stated that the two nations have consistently worked together to advance regional cooperation through platforms such as the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, and the United Nations.

The ministry also highlighted the importance of the movement of people between both countries under regional free-movement frameworks, noting that it has strengthened economic and cultural relations while promoting people-to-people diplomacy.

Nigeria also acknowledged Ghana’s role in promoting democratic governance and regional stability, noting that both countries have collaborated in peacekeeping operations, mediation efforts, and conflict-prevention initiatives across West Africa.

As Ghana celebrates this year’s independence anniversary under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” Nigeria commended the resilience and determination of the Ghanaian people in advancing national development and strengthening democratic institutions.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Ghana through expanded economic cooperation, enhanced diplomatic consultations, and increased cultural and educational exchanges.

Nigeria expressed confidence that the partnership between Abuja and Accra would continue to grow and contribute to regional prosperity, economic integration, and the vision of a peaceful and united Africa. The government also conveyed its best wishes to the people and government of Ghana for continued peace, democratic consolidation, and sustainable development.
