The Federal Government in facilitation with the government and people of The Gambia as she marks her 61st Independence anniversary has extended warm regards and congratulations to the people of the country.
Nigeria’s message was contained in a congratulatory note by the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad of The Gambia, Honourable Sering Modou Njie on the joyous occasion of their Independence Day, commemorated annually on 18 February.
According to a statement signed on Wednesday by the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the historic anniversary marks The Gambia’s attainment of independence in 1965 and reflects the country’s enduring commitment to sovereignty, democratic governance, and national unity.
The statement noted that Nigeria and The Gambia shared a longstanding and fraternal relationship rooted in common history, cultural affinity, and shared membership in regional and international organizations, particularly ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations.
“Both countries have consistently collaborated in advancing democratic norms, regional stability, and economic integration within West Africa.”
The statement quoted the Honourable Minister, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations with The Gambia, expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, and consolidating people-to-people ties that reflect the spirit of African solidarity and shared progress.
“On this significant national occasion, the Government and people of Nigeria convey their best wishes to the Government and people of The Gambia for continued peace, democratic consolidation, and sustainable development,” the statement added.
