Nigeria Police Council Endorses Disu as New IGP, Swearing-in Wednesday

The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the Inspector-General of Police,

The swearing-in is scheduled to take place on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council meeting.

According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday , March 2, the council meeting was presided over by Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended Disu for his exemplary service, particularly during his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he earned recognition for excellence in crime control.

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, also described the appointment as well deserved, citing the new police chief’s outstanding career record.

Nyesom Wike equally praised Disu’s professionalism, recalling his service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and officer in charge of the anti-kidnapping unit, as well as his later role as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and has held several operational, investigative and strategic command positions across the country.

Until his appointment, he was the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Lagos.

Others at the meeting included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Esther Didi Walson-Jack
