Zamfara, Nigeria- The Nigerian Army announced on Sunday evening that troops of the 8 Division, operating under Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma, engaged bandits linked to the leader Gwaska Dan Karmi in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The operation followed intelligence that over 100 bandits had gathered in the area to plan attacks on local communities and military supply lines. After days of surveillance, ground troops, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, intercepted the bandits on January 31, 2026.

A gun battle occurred as the bandits attempted to outflank the troops. Soldiers overpowered the bandits with superior firepower. While several bandits were killed, others escaped with gunshot injuries. Structures used by the bandits were set on fire before the troops withdrew. The Air Force continues to provide support, and ground troops remain in the area.

Some soldiers were killed during the operation, and one combat vehicle was destroyed after being hit by an enemy rocket propelled gun. The Nigerian Army honoured the fallen and stated that it remains committed to dismantling bandit networks and securing communities.
