Ahead of his side’s Champions League round of 16 first leg clash against Real Madrid, Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has admitted that the history and success of Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League command enormous respect, even as he prepares to face the Spanish giants again. Speaking to TNT Sports and monitored by AfrikTimes, Guardiola highlighted Madrid’s dominance in Europe, noting that the club’s record speaks for itself.

“Real Madrid have 15 Champions League titles and they have more Champions Leagues than we are years playing that competition,” Guardiola said.

The Spanish coach also acknowledged the unique atmosphere at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, admitting that he is aware he is not always warmly received there.

“I know I’m not incredibly loved in this place, but I like to come to the Bernabéu,” he said.

Despite the rivalry and tension that often surrounds his visits, Guardiola insisted he holds deep respect for the Madrid institution and its influence on world football.

“People here in Madrid don’t believe that I have respect, but I have a lot of respect for this institution because it has done many, many good things for world football,” he added.

Guardiola’s comments come ahead of another high-profile European clash on Wednesday, adding further intrigue to one of football’s most intense managerial and club rivalries.
