The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship candidate for Offa Local Government Area in Kwara State, Salahudeen Lukman, has stated that no council election took place in the area.
In a statement on Saturday, Lukman explained that the election, scheduled for that day, did not hold due to severe logistical failures and irregularities.
The PDP candidate also berated the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) for failing to distribute election materials promptly to polling units across the local government.
The statement read: “The people of Offa Local Government faced another disappointment due to the incompetence of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) today. The People’s Democratic Party and concerned stakeholders wish to inform the general public and relevant authorities that no election took place on September 21st, 2024, in Offa Local Government due to severe logistical failures and irregularities.
“Despite the election being scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m., by 1:00 p.m., voting materials had yet to arrive at 95% of the polling units across the 173 polling stations in Offa Local Government Area. In the few locations where materials were delivered, key components, such as ballot papers, were incomplete, and result sheets were entirely missing.
“This unfortunate situation left voters frustrated, preventing them from exercising their democratic rights. The delays and lack of essential materials raise serious concerns about the credibility and preparedness of the electoral process in Offa.
“We call on the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) to urgently address these issues and reschedule the election in a transparent and timely manner to ensure that the people of Offa can participate in a free, fair, and credible election.
“We urge all citizens to remain calm and await further updates from the relevant authorities.”
