Matchday 34 of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) delivered a mix of thrilling outcomes for expectant fans. However, it was a frustrating outing for supporters of the Oluyole Warriors, as Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) failed to secure maximum points against Kwara United, with the encounter ending in a goalless stalemate.
Shooting Stars, with home advantage, came into the fixture on the back of a narrow 1-0 away defeat to Remo Stars, while Kwara United, still embroiled in the relegation battle, approached the tie with renewed confidence following a 3-0 victory over El-Kanemi Warriors on Matchday 33. Notably, the reverse fixture between both sides had also ended in a stalemate.
The Ibadan-based side made a solitary change to their starting XI, with Ayobami Junior reinstated in midfield. Kwara United, on their part, introduced Sikiru, Abutu, and Ozor to bolster their attacking options.
The match kicked off at exactly three minutes past four at the Lekan Salami Stadium on Sunda, April 12, with both sides showing early intent to break the deadlock. The home crowd provided an electrifying atmosphere, but their expectations were gradually deflated as the first half unfolded without a breakthrough.
In the 7th minute, 3SC forward Lucky Emmanuel unleashed a powerful effort, but it sailed off target. Moments later, he stepped up for a free-kick in a promising area, but his attempt failed to beat the defensive wall. Ismail was also presented with an opportunity shortly after, yet his effort drifted wide. Despite sustained attacking pressure from the hosts, clear-cut chances remained scarce. By the 23rd minute, Lucky Emmanuel registered another attempt, but it was comfortably gathered by the goalkeeper Ayeleso
Kwara United, despite being on the back foot for spells, remained resolute defensively and threatened intermittently through set-pieces, earning a series of corners and forcing 3SC goalkeeper Godsgift into action. At the interval, both sides headed into the dressing room on level terms, with neither able to find the cutting edge in the final third.
The first half was largely characterised by poor decision-making, misplaced passes, and a lack of clinical finishing. Noticeably, these unprecedented factors diminished the overall quality of the contest and left the fans disappointed.
The second half resumed with renewed urgency, and Shooting Stars nearly found the breakthrough just two minutes after the restart. In the 47th minute, Lucky Emmanuel struck the crossbar from close range, with the rebound eventually cleared to safety. It proved to be the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock.
As the game wore on, the tempo remained below par, with both teams struggling to impose themselves in attacking areas. The rhythm of play was disrupted by frequent stoppages, erratic passing sequences, and a noticeable lack of cohesion in the final third. Set-pieces, which could have provided a decisive edge, were poorly executed, lacking both precision and technical quality.
A late opportunity fell to 3SC defender Al-Ameen in stoppage time (90+4), as he capitalised on a rare forward run to attempt a long-range strike. However, his effort was safely handled by Kwara United goalkeeper Ayeleso, who remained assured between the sticks.

The stalemate significantly dents Shooting Stars’ aspirations of securing a continental slot. With the current NPFL standings, the Oluyole Warriors now trail fourth-placed Ikorodu City by four points. This is a gap that could prove decisive in the race for a CAF Confederation Cup ticket. Objectively, 3SC’s performance lacked the urgency and cutting edge expected of a side pushing for continental qualification, instead reflecting a team seemingly resigned to consolidating their current position, as they sit precariously in sixth place.
Conversely, the result offers a lifeline to Kwara United in their fight for survival. The Ilorin-based side climbs to 16th position with 40 points, just above the relegation zone, edging Bayelsa United on goal difference despite being level on points.
