The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has resumed operations on the Abuja–Kaduna Railway following a derailment that occurred on March 16, 2026.
Managing Director of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa assured passengers of their safety, stating that measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence of the incident. He made this known in a post on X on Wednesday, emphasizing improved safety and operational standards.
“Following the incident on Monday, 16th March 2026, normal train operations have been fully restored through the swift intervention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” Opeifa said.
“Passengers can now confidently book tickets, as improved safety and operational measures have been implemented to ensure secure and comfortable journeys.”
He also confirmed the successful resumption of the AKTS return trip from Rigasa, noting that passengers were welcomed back on March 17 with support from local traditional leadership, including Ishaq Ibrahim Tanko.
Opeifa highlighted that the corporation’s rapid response helped minimize disruption, reaffirming its commitment to passenger safety and service reliability. According to the NRC, the return of services signals a restoration of normalcy for commuters along the busy rail corridor.
AfrikTimes on Monday reported that the incident, which occurred around 9:16 a.m. near Asham Station, involved train KA2 traveling from Rigasa. After departing Jere, where an additional rear locomotive had been attached, the locomotive reportedly detached while in motion, rolled forward, and collided with the rear of the train.
The train was carrying 429 passengers, along with crew and security personnel. No fatalities were recorded, though some passengers sustained injuries and received immediate medical attention before the train proceeded to Idu Station.
