Marketers in Numan local government area of Adamawa State have reconvened to address rising concerns over alleged irregularities in the annual tax collection exercise at the New Market. The meeting, jointly organized by the Gamzaki Traders Association in collaboration with the Rana Tafito Marketers Association, brought together key stakeholders and leaders of various traders’ unions.
Among those in attendance were the Acting Chairman of the Gamzaki Traders Association, Numan Chapter, Alhaji Baba Abdullahi; the Zonal Chairman of the Rana Tafito Traders Association, Alhaji Rabiu Baba; the Chairman of the Tailors Association, Alhaji Aminu Mai Zare; and several other union members.
Addressing the gathering, Alhaji Baba Abdullahi expressed strong dissatisfaction with the conduct of tax collectors, describing their actions as a clear violation of earlier agreements reached with the incumbent Chairman of Numan Local Government.
He alleged that some traders were coerced into paying up to ₦100,000, while shops belonging to those unable to meet the demand were reportedly locked. He condemned the practice as unlawful and unacceptable, stressing the need for urgent intervention.
Alhaji Baba Abdullahi also highlighted challenges related to traders’ registration with the union, urging marketers to formally register and actively contest leadership positions. According to him, a strong and inclusive union structure would enhance the traders’ ability to defend their collective interests.
In his remarks, Alhaji Rabiu Baba emphasized the importance of unity and collective action in addressing the challenges facing traders. He noted that, in addition to tax-related concerns, marketers were also grappling with poor security and indiscriminate refuse dumping within the market premises.
Adding his voice, a concerned trader, Sani Ahmad, lamented the alleged harassment and mistreatment of traders by tax collectors. He called for unity among marketers, stressing that strong leadership and cooperation were essential for progress and protection against unfair practices.
The meeting ended with key resolutions, including a call for all traders to register with the Gamzaki Traders Association, the purchase of nomination forms by interested members to contest leadership positions, and the adoption of broader strategies to strengthen collective bargaining and address pressing issues affecting the New Market.
