The Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Surveyor Segun Olayiwola, has commended the contributions of nurses to the healthcare system, charging them to be diligent, focused and of good conduct.

In a press release issued by the Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery on Tuesday, February 24, the commissioner made this known while speaking at the matriculation ceremony of the one hundred and ninety-eight (198) students admitted for the 2025/2026 academic session.

“Nurses are the backbone of healthcare. Your profession is about compassion, care, and dedication to humanity. Be diligent, focused, and of good conduct. The journey will be challenging, but the rewards outweigh the hindrances,” he said.

Olayiwola, who was represented by Mr. Raheem Olatubosun, noted that the College is a pride of the Oyo State Government and lauded its meaningful impact on the nursing profession.

Also speaking, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetumobi, represented by Dr. Waheed Lanre-Abass, congratulated the students, noting that the improved facilities and accreditation status of the institution are outcomes of the state government’s investment in health infrastructure and human capital development.

“No health system can function effectively without well-trained, competent, and motivated healthcare professionals,” she stated.

In her welcome address, the Provost of the College, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, charged the students to see the matriculation as a significant step in their professional journey, stressing that society would place lives and trust in their hands.

“Nursing is more than a career; it is a calling. From this day forward, you are not just students; you are nurses in training. Society will place lives in your hands, and that trust must never be taken lightly,” she said.

She cautioned against misconduct, including examination malpractice, absenteeism and falsification of records, while advising the students to uphold good character throughout their training.
