The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has rescheduled the local government council elections in Oyo State to Tuesday, December 29, 2026, following a revision of the national electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the OYSIEC Chairman, Babatunde Afees Adeniyi.

According to the commission, the council elections were initially scheduled for January 16, 2027, but had to be moved after INEC adjusted the date for the presidential and National Assembly elections to the same day.

“The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission hereby informs political parties, security agencies, stakeholders and the general public that the Local Government Election earlier scheduled for Saturday, 16 January 2027 has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 29 December 2026 between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

“This decision became necessary following the recent revision of the national electoral timetable by INEC… thereby creating an operational and logistical overlap,” the commission said.

The commission added that after consultations, it resolved to shift the election date to December 29, 2026, in order to avoid operational congestion and ensure effective security deployment and voter participation.

OYSIEC further stated that electioneering campaigns by political parties will end at midnight on December 28, 2026, while any rerun election arising from the exercise will be conducted on January 5, 2027, urging stakeholders to continue preparations in line with the revised timetable.
