The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has acknowledged a new video, published by The Sun, that reportedly shows suspended Premier League referee David Coote snorting a white powder during Euro 2024 last summer. This follows Coote’s recent suspension for a separate incident where he allegedly made derogatory remarks about Liverpool and former manager Jürgen Klopp.
In a statement, a PGMOL spokesperson said, “We are aware of the allegations and are taking them very seriously. David Coote remains suspended pending a full investigation. His welfare continues to be of utmost importance to us, and we are committed to providing him with the necessary support he needs through this period.”
Earlier this week, UEFA also confirmed Coote’s suspension, stating that their Referees Committee acted immediately upon learning of his alleged conduct. A spokesperson from UEFA said, “David Coote was suspended on November 11, ahead of the upcoming UEFA matches, due to awareness of his inappropriate behaviour.”
PGMOL Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb also addressed the issue on Match Officials Mic’d Up, emphasizing that PGMOL is treating the matter with seriousness. He confirmed, “One of our referees, David Coote, has been suspended with immediate effect, pending the outcome of our full investigation. At this time, we are unable to comment further until the investigation concludes.”
The incidents have prompted both PGMOL and the FA to launch comprehensive investigations into Coote’s conduct.
