Anambra, Nigeria — The Anambra State Police Command on Tuesday announced the enforcement of the closure of the Onitsha Main Market, following a directive issued by the Anambra State Government and approved by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.
According to the Command, police officers, working alongside other security agencies, were deployed to the market and strategic locations within Onitsha to ensure compliance with the directive and prevent any breakdown of law and order. Traders who gathered around the market area were also addressed and sensitised on the need to obey the government’s decision in the interest of public safety, security, and economic stability.
Authorities stated that the security situation in Onitsha and other parts of Anambra State remains calm, adding that monitoring efforts are ongoing to prevent any disruption of public peace.
The enforcement follows a report by Afriktimes on Monday that Governor Soludo had ordered the closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week after traders kept their shops closed in observance of the sit-at-home promoted by the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The sit-at-home has been observed regularly on Mondays across parts of the South-East. IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 20, 2025, on terrorism related charges, including inciting violence and actions that contributed to economic disruption.
