Action Sparks Outrage and Diplomatic Response

Summary

  • Saudi Arabia bars Sheikh Ahmad Gumi from performing Hajj 2025 despite valid visa.
  • Gumi attributes restriction to his political views; Nigeria to engage Saudi authorities.
  • Supporters condemn action as suppression of free speech and religious rights.

Kaduna, Nigeria — A wave of reaction has followed the revelation by prominent Nigerian Islamic cleric, Sheikh Mufti Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, that he was barred from completing the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage by Saudi authorities, despite possessing a valid visa.

In a public statement, Sheikh Gumi confirmed that he had returned to Nigeria after being “prevented” from completing the pilgrimage, referencing Qur’an 2:196, which addresses such situations.

While he did not elaborate on the specific reasons for the restriction, he alluded to the Saudi government’s discomfort with his vocal views on world politics, particularly relating to the plight of Palestinians.

“I’m now free to attend to my health and farming activities,” the Sheikh stated, while expressing gratitude to Nigerian authorities for pledging to raise the issue with their Saudi counterparts.

The move has drawn sharp criticism from some Nigerians, including public commentator Usman Balarabe Isah Kure, who called the Saudi decision “shocking and unjustifiable.” He attributed the action to Gumi’s outspokenness on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and his criticisms of Saudi Arabia’s perceived alliance with Western powers.

“Sheikh Gumi is not just a religious leader; he is a global peace ambassador who has consistently called out oppression, particularly in Palestine,” Kure stated.

He described the action as an attack on free speech and a reflection of broader authoritarian practices within the kingdom. Supporters of the Sheikh insist he remains undeterred and will continue to advocate for justice and the oppressed around the world.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government is expected to initiate diplomatic engagement with Saudi authorities over the issue, as concerns rise about the implications for religious freedom and international relations.
