The Nigerian Senate has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the dualisation of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe highway, describing the project as a major boost to infrastructure development in the North-East and North-Central regions.
The commendation followed a Point of Order raised on the Senate floor by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP–Bauchi) during plenary on Tuesday. Senator Ningi recalled that the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, recently announced that the Federal Government had awarded a contract for the long-awaited road project.
Presenting the motion, Ningi expressed gratitude on behalf of senators from Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, Nasarawa and Adamawa states. He noted that the highway had remained undualised for nearly four decades, despite its strategic importance to economic activities and national integration.
“This is a road we have waited for almost 40 years. Over the years, it appeared the Nigerian nation had forgotten the people of Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe and Adamawa. This corridor is the only major route left in the country without a dual carriageway,” he stated.
In his remarks, Senator Danjuma Goje (APC–Gombe) also praised the President for responding to the yearnings of the people. He described the project as evidence of the administration’s commitment to addressing critical infrastructure deficits across the country.
The Senate urged its Committees on Works and Finance to ensure adequate funding and oversight so that the project is completed as planned, stressing that the highway would enhance trade, security and regional connectivity when delivered.
