Super Falcons set for semi-final showdown with Banyana Banyana

Summary

  • Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a blockbuster semi-final on 22 July in Casablanca
  • Both teams are unbeaten in the tournament, with Nigeria eyeing a 10th title and South Africa aiming to defend their crown
  • The match revives a fierce rivalry, described as a “final before the final” in African women’s football

Casablanca, Morocco — Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set to take on reigning champions South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), in what has been billed as one of the tournament’s most anticipated encounters.

The high-stakes clash will kick off at 5:00 PM WAT (4:00 PM GMT) on Tuesday, 22 July 2025, at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Super Falcons have had an outstanding campaign, winning all four matches without conceding a single goal. They booked their semi-final place with a commanding 5-0 win over Zambia, bringing their goal tally to eight.

Led by captain Rasheedat Ajibade, with key contributions from Chinwendu Ihezuo, Esther Okoronkwo, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, the team is on a mission to secure a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

South Africa’s path to the semi-finals has also been impressive. After topping Group C and seeing off Senegal in a tense penalty shootout, coach Desiree Ellis’s side are determined to retain their 2022 crown. Although they will be without star forward Thembi Kgatlana, experienced players like Refiloe Jane and Jermaine Seoposenwe are expected to step up.

The semi-final carries added weight due to the historic rivalry between the two sides. South Africa ended Nigeria’s 20-year unbeaten run in WAFCON group stage matches in 2022, but Nigeria famously edged them in the 2018 final on penalties. With a final spot and bragging rights on the line, both teams are expected to bring intensity, discipline, and flair to the pitch.

Fans across Africa and beyond can watch the match live on major broadcasting platforms, including Olympics.com, with the winner set to face either Morocco or Ghana in the final on 26 July.
