‎Taraba State Moves Forward with 15MW Waste-to-Energy Project, Holds ESIA Workshop in Jalingo

‎The Taraba State Government has taken a significant step toward establishing a 15-megawatt waste-to-energy power plant in Jalingo with the organisation of a scoping workshop on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the proposed project.

‎The workshop, held at the conference hall of the Chairman of Jalingo Local Government Area, brought together community representatives and key stakeholders. The session aimed to educate residents on the nature of the project, its proposed locations, and its environmental and social implications.

‎The waste-to-energy plant is a joint initiative between the Taraba State Government and Sector Lead Limited. Designed to generate 15 megawatts of electricity, the facility will also produce recyclable materials while addressing waste management challenges in the state capital.

‎Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Waste Management, Hon. Bernard Shonzen, commended Governor Agbu Kefas for what he described as a forward-looking initiative aimed at improving the quality of life for residents.

‎Similarly, the Chairman of Jalingo Local Government Area, Honourable Nura Dantsoho, praised the governor’s commitment to development, describing the proposed plant as a major boost for Jalingo. He pledged the council’s full support toward ensuring the project’s success.

‎A representative of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr. Adamu Bulama Maina, an Assistant Director at the ministry, explained that Jalingo would be divided into operational units to improve waste collection and processing efficiency. He noted that the workshop marked a crucial stage in the process toward establishing the plant.

‎In his presentation, Mr. Ojo Daniel highlighted waste-to-energy technology as a growing global innovation. Beyond electricity generation, he said the plant would empower residents, create employment opportunities, and produce valuable by-products. The facility is expected to process approximately 2,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily once operational.

‎Also speaking, the Programme Director of the Taraba State Strategy and Portfolio Delivery Office, Ejero Jakpa, said the engagement was designed to raise awareness about the project and its potential environmental and social impacts.

‎The District Head of Howai in Jalingo expressed appreciation to the state government for attracting the project, noting that it would accelerate development and enhance infrastructure in the state.

‎When completed, the 15MW waste-to-energy power plant is expected to significantly strengthen electricity supply, improve solid waste management, and stimulate economic growth across Taraba State.
