Wizkid’s Grammy-nominated album has become the most successful Nigerian album on Apple Music. In celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, Apple Music released a list of the greatest Nigerian musicians, hits, and albums of all time.
The initiative, titled “Oshe Naija,” which translates to “Thanks Nigeria” in Yoruba, is a month-long project by Apple Music that highlights the regions that have significantly shaped Nigerian music and helped it reach a global audience. This project is part of Apple Music’s larger celebration of Nigeria’s Independence Day.
As part of the festivities, Apple Music released a list of the top 10 most-streamed Nigerian albums ever on the platform.
Wizkid’s highly praised 2020 album “Made in Lagos” comes in first place on the list. The album gave rise to the worldwide hit song “Essence,” which included Tems and took home the 2022 BET Award for Best Collaboration.
The second record on the list is Burna Boy’s Grammy-nominated sixth album, “Love, Damini,” while the third album is his Grammy-nominated fourth album, “African Giant.”
‘For Broken Ears’ by Tems is the fourth most streamed Nigerian album on Apple Music ever. It’s the only EP on the list and the only project by a female artist.
In addition, Apple Music’s celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence will feature eight specially curated playlists by top Nigerian artists, including Afro-fusion star Omah Lay (Port Harcourt), Hip-Hop sensation ODUMODUBLVCK (Abuja), rapper Shallipopi (Benin City), Afro-R&B artist Qing Madi (Benin City), genre-blending singer Seyi Vibez (Lagos), legendary Afro-pop singer 2Baba (Jos), rapper Jeriq (Enugu), and rising star Bloody Civilian (Abuja).
