Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has asserted that Nigeria remains a democracy despite the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s growing dominance, which he attributed to the party’s performance and reform agenda.

Speaking at the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu said the party is not turning Nigeria into a one-party state but is simply delivering results that attract support.

“We are one party ruling and carrying on with the aspirations of Nigerians. You don’t expect people to remain in a sinking ship without a life jacket,” Tinubu said, defending the wave of defections into the APC.

At the summit, which reviewed his administration’s two-year performance, APC leaders, including 22 governors, National Assembly heads, and the party’s National Working Committee, unanimously endorsed him for a second term in 2027.

Party Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje affirmed that Tinubu would be the APC’s sole presidential candidate, urging unity and community engagement among party members.

Highlighting achievements, Tinubu defended his administration’s tough economic decisions, including eliminating multiple exchange rates and launching tax reforms. He claimed these moves have curbed corruption and attracted foreign direct investment.

However, public reactions remain sharply divided. Supporters on social media hailed his “bold reforms,” while critics voiced frustration over soaring food and fuel prices. Others warned that the early endorsements risk stifling political opposition and debate.

The summit also assessed progress in health, infrastructure, and security as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
