A grieving mother is calling on the Lagos State Government to bring her son’s killers to justice after he was allegedly murdered in a homophobic attack in the Epe community in October 2024.
Ademola Johnson died from severe head injuries after he and his partner, Oladiran Olawuyi, were attacked by a mob who accused them of being in a gay relationship. The incident occurred at a hotel (name withheld) where the two men were reportedly meeting in private.
Eyewitnesses said the mob recognised the pair, dragged them out of the hotel, stripped them naked, and beat them. Johnson died shortly after the attack, while Olawuyi escaped and has not been seen since.
Speaking to reporters, Johnson’s mother, Mrs. Felicia Johnson, expressed her anguish and pleaded for government intervention.
“I urge the state government to find the killers of my son to ensure justice is served,” she said. “Whether he is dead or alive, we don’t know.”
Both families are said to be devastated, especially as efforts to locate Olawuyi have so far been unsuccessful. His whereabouts remain unknown, and his family continues to search for him.
A community leader, Chief Aro, who reportedly tried to intervene during the incident, said he helped Olawuyi escape the angry mob.
“Although I am not gay, I have compassion and empathy for them,” he said. “It is their life; they should be allowed to live it.”
He added that he has not seen Olawuyi since the day of the attack.
As the investigation stalls, the victims’ families are calling for justice, accountability, and protection for all citizens regardless of sexual orientation.
