Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully repelled coordinated night attacks by suspected Islamist terrorists on several military formations in Borno State, killing a number of insurgents, including senior commanders.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North East), Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba.
According to the statement, the attacks were launched on military positions in Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok between about 10:30 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Friday.
The military explained that the troops put up strong resistance and maintained their defensive positions despite intense fighting from the attackers.
Reinforcement teams from different operational sectors later carried out flanking manoeuvres, forcing the terrorists to retreat in disarray. In areas where parts of the defensive perimeter were briefly breached, troops swiftly launched counter-attacks and regained full control of the affected positions.
The statement added that several insurgent leaders, including key commanders, were killed during the clashes, while other fighters were also neutralised in the counter-offensive.
Meanwhile, Nigerian Air Force airstrikes conducted during the night targeted fleeing militants and suspected hideouts, further weakening the group’s fighting capacity.
Ground troops are currently conducting search and clearance operations across the affected areas, recovering bodies, weapons, and other equipment left behind by the fleeing insurgents.
However, the military confirmed that some soldiers lost their lives during the fighting, including an officer who died while leading his troops in the battle.
Operation Hadin Kai said it remains firmly in control of the attacked locations and noted that the failed assaults indicate increasing pressure on terrorist groups operating in the North-East.
