Abuja, Nigeria

Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda, who served as Senate Minority Leader in the 9th Senate while representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Earlier, AfrikTimes reported that Aduda had resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signalling his exit from the opposition party. Aduda made the move on Tuesday, where he also pledged to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in the FCT.

The former lawmaker was formally received into the ruling party at its National Secretariat by the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee.

His defection is seen as a significant political development in the FCT, where the APC has been working to strengthen its structure and electoral prospects. With this development, the current Senator representing the FCT at the red chamber, Senator Ireti Kingibe will be facing a fierce competition from Aduda for the FCT seat in the 2027 general election. As an ally of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, he stands to receive all the needed support to ensure Kingibe doesn’t return to the Senate as the Minister has stated at different fora that he will work against the re-election of Kingibe to the red chamber.
