Ibadan, Nigeria — The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Oyo State Axis, has strongly condemned the killing of a secondary school student in Ibadan, who was reportedly shot by a stray bullet on his way to sit for a West African Examination Council (WAEC) paper.
According to a press statement issued by the association on Tuesday, the fatal bullet was allegedly fired by a police officer engaged in a vehicle pursuit. The tragedy has sparked outrage, leading to a protest in which youths carried the victim’s corpse to the Oyo State Secretariat, demanding justice.
NANS expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a senseless and avoidable loss that underscores the need for urgent reform in Nigeria’s policing system.
“No student should ever leave home in pursuit of education and not return alive,” the statement read. “This is a grave injustice that must not be swept under the rug.”
Signed by Timothy Taiwo Ademola (Executive Chairman) and Fadare Tolase (General Secretary), the statement called for calm and peaceful protest, urging youths not to allow violence overshadow the demand for justice and accountability.
The association revealed that it is already in contact with relevant authorities and security agencies, pushing for a transparent investigation into the killing.
“This tragic event is a stark reminder of the urgent need for a reformed, disciplined, and humane approach to policing in Nigeria,” the statement concluded, reaffirming NANS JCC Oyo’s commitment to student safety and rights.
As the case unfolds, calls are mounting for those responsible to face the full weight of the law and for systemic changes to prevent future tragedies.
