The Yobe State Government has rewarded Mrs. Gambo Lawan, a junior secondary school teacher, with a tertiary education scholarship after she emerged as the North-East Best Performing Teacher at the 2026 Federal Ministry of Education National Teachers Award.

‎Announcing the gesture, the Chairman of the Yobe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Malam Umar Hassan Babayo, said the scholarship was awarded in recognition of Mrs. Lawan’s outstanding achievement and dedication to the teaching profession.

‎He explained that the award winner competed with teachers from 12 states across the federation and distinguished herself as the best in the North-East, bringing pride and honour to Yobe State.

‎Babayo noted that although Mrs. Lawan already holds a university degree, the Board is willing to sponsor her further academic pursuits should she decide to advance her qualifications.

‎According to him, the scholarship is aimed at encouraging professional development among teachers while celebrating excellence in the education sector.

‎Earlier, the Desk Officer for Debate in the Department of Schools and Academic Services, Yagana Babagana, disclosed that Yobe State was represented at the competition by Mrs. Lawan, a teacher from Government Day Junior Secondary School, Yerimaram in Potiskum Local Government Area.

‎She said the teacher presented an innovative project on a solar cooker, which impressed the panel of judges and contributed significantly to her success.

‎Babagana further explained that contestants underwent practical teaching sessions and rigorous questioning by a screening committee to assess their subject mastery, pedagogy, innovation, and communication skills.

‎She added that Ogun State emerged as the overall winner of the national competition with a prize of N50 million, while Yobe’s nominee and other regional winners received N25 million each, along with an additional N5 million pledge from the Governor of Kebbi State.

‎In her remarks, the award recipient, Malama Gambo Lawan, expressed gratitude to the Yobe State Government for the recognition and support.

‎She noted that only Yobe and Adamawa states represented the North-East at the national stage and expressed pride in emerging as the regional winner.

‎Mrs. Lawan pledged to continue contributing her best to the development of education in the state and to serve as a role model to other teachers.
