The Zamfara State Government has rolled out extensive security measures ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, while Kano State has announced the suspension of its traditional Sallah Durbar due to security concerns.

In Zamfara, the government convened a high-level security meeting in Gusau, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, on behalf of Governor Dauda Lawal. The meeting brought together heads of security and paramilitary agencies to assess the security situation and strengthen preparedness for the festive period.

Security agencies disclosed that about 1,474 personnel, including police officers, civil defence corps, intelligence operatives, road safety officials, and explosive ordnance disposal teams, have been deployed across the state. The move is aimed at ensuring the safety of residents before, during, and after the celebrations.

Nakwada urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, stressing that maintaining peace and safety is a collective responsibility. He also called on traditional and religious leaders, particularly Chief Imams, to promote unity and peaceful coexistence in their sermons.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has suspended the Sallah Durbar, a prominent cultural horse-riding festival, citing credible intelligence reports of possible security threats.

The decision followed emerging tensions surrounding parallel Durbar plans linked to the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II. Authorities expressed concern that the situation could lead to a breakdown of law and order during the festivities.

As part of the suspension, key Durbar activities such as Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau, and Hawan Dorayi have been cancelled. However, the government approved modified versions of select events, including Hawan Idi and Hawan Nassarawa, to be conducted under controlled conditions by Emir Sanusi II.

According to the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya, the decision was reached after consultations with the Kano Emirate Council and other stakeholders, with public safety as the top priority.

The developments highlight heightened security awareness across northern states as Nigeria prepares for the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
