On Thursday 15 January 2026, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, working with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, resealed two properties at No. 34 and No. 38 Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos Island. The buildings were discharging untreated wastewater and raw sewage into the environment. Officials reported that the septic chambers were dilapidated, the tanks were overflowing, and there was a persistent bad smell in the area. The properties were also resealed because a previous government seal had been broken.

This incident is part of a larger, long standing problem with untreated wastewater in Lagos. Residents across the city often report bad odours from overflowing septic tanks and raw sewage flowing into streets, drains, and public spaces. Similar cases have been recorded over the past few years. In January 2025, a block at Ebute-Ero Market in Apongbon was resealed after sewage was illegally channeled into public drains and a nearby lagoon. In April 2025, a property at Viva Bella Court II in Lekki Peninsula II had an overflowing septic tank spilling untreated wastewater into drains. In June 2025, a residential building at No. 59 Ajoke Okusanya Street in Okota was resealed after raw sewage entered the public drainage system. In September 2025, two residential complexes in Ikota GRA, Eti-Osa were closed after untreated wastewater was discharged into surrounding areas.

These incidents show that untreated wastewater and poor sanitation remain ongoing problems in Lagos. Residents continue to experience bad smells and unsafe conditions from overflowing septic tanks. The resealing of the Adeniji Adele Road properties is one of many similar operations, showing that untreated wastewater discharge is a recurring issue in the city.
