Lagos, Nigeria – A petrol laden tanker overturned on the Tincan Liverpool Bridge in Apapa, Lagos, on Monday morning during peak traffic hours, leading to severe congestion along the corridor as the Lagos State Fire Service and rescue team moved to the scene and cordoned off the bridge to prevent further danger.
The incident occurred while commuters were heading to work, forcing traffic managers to introduce a counter flow system to ease vehicular movement, which remained slow as of the time of reporting.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed in a statement on Monday morning that emergency responders were on ground doing the needful, while recovery efforts were ongoing.
Before the arrival of full emergency control, some residents were seen scooping petrol from the overturned tanker using jerrycans and other containers, despite the obvious risk involved.
LASTMA advised motorists to plan their movement accordingly, as traffic remained heavy along the Apapa corridor pending the recovery of the tanker and full reopening of the bridge.
