Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government announced yesterday a new project to identify, document, and properly develop all informal land areas across the state.
The initiative aims to reduce misuse of land, increase revenue, and unlock economic value.
Officials at a meeting hosted by the Lagos State Valuation Office in Alausa said many informal lands in Lagos have been misused over time. The government is now taking steps to formalise these spaces and put them to productive use.
The state has appointed the consultancy firm Octagon Multi Projects to lead the project, working with all relevant ministries and agencies. The initiative is being implemented under the slogan “In Lagos, every square meter matters.”
A similar project carried out a decade ago, initially valued at ₦800 million, has grown to about ₦8 billion, showing the potential revenue Lagos has been losing from undeveloped land.
The project will cover 3,744 hectares of informal land across the state, with an estimated value of ₦3 trillion.
Compensation will be provided where necessary. The land will be documented, valued, and used to increase government revenue and attract investment.
Officials said the collaboration between the Valuation Office, Octagon, and other state agencies will ensure all land, developments, and walkways are properly accounted for, creating more opportunities for growth and investment in Lagos.
