Abuja, Nigeria-The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced today, Thursday, February 5, 2026, that Justice F.E. Messiri of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Abuja, convicted and sentenced former Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) Managing Director Roberts Orya to 490 years in prison for bank fraud.
According to the EFCC, Orya was arraigned in 2021 on 49 counts, including obtaining money by false pretences, forgery, and advance fee fraud, involving N2.4 billion.
EFCC said count one alleged that on September 21, 2011, Orya induced NEXIM Bank to pay Treasuremix Construction Limited N488 million, falsely claiming Luxurium Leisure Services Limited was the beneficiary.
Count two emphasizes that on February 19, 2013, he induced NEXIM Bank to pay N630 million under a similar false claim.
EFCC reported that Orya pleaded not guilty. Seven witnesses were called, and Justice Messiri ruled that the prosecution proved its case, convicting Orya on all counts and sentencing him to 10 years per count, totaling 490 years, to run concurrently.
EFCC noted Orya served as NEXIM Managing Director from 2009 to 2016, first appointed by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua and reappointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
