The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Yobe State Command, has reported a 26 per cent reduction in road traffic crashes in 2025 compared to the previous year.

‎The Sector Commander, Mr Andrew Longkam, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Damaturu.

‎Longkam recalled that the command had earlier launched the 2025 Ember Months Sensitisation Campaign across the state, which featured a press conference, motorcade and town hall meetings aimed at promoting safer road use.

‎According to him, crash statistics for 2025 indicate a drop from 158 cases recorded in 2024 to 117 in 2025.

‎However, he noted that fatalities increased from 78 in 2024 to 115 in 2025, while the number of injured persons rose from 867 to 926 within the same period.

‎He further revealed that the total number of persons involved in road crashes increased from 1,549 in 2024 to 1,664 in 2025. Meanwhile, the number of persons rescued without injury rose slightly from 604 in 2024 to 623 in 2025.

‎Despite the spike in deaths and injuries, the sector commander maintained that the increase in fatalities did not reflect poor performance by the command, stressing that enforcement and public enlightenment efforts were intensified throughout the year.

‎Longkam disclosed that 13,538 traffic offenders were arrested and sanctioned in 2025 as part of efforts to enforce compliance with traffic regulations.

‎He identified speeding as the leading cause of crashes, accounting for about 80 per cent of incidents. Other major causes include tyre violations, dangerous driving, overloading and route violations.

‎The sector commander reaffirmed the command’s commitment to aligning with the Corps’ Corporate Strategic Goal 2026, which aims to reduce road traffic crashes nationwide by 10 per cent through data-driven interventions.

‎He assured that the Yobe Command would intensify enforcement, expand public awareness campaigns and strengthen collaboration with emergency response services.

‎Longkam also urged stakeholders and members of the public to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations, emphasizing that road safety remains a shared responsibility.
