The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University chapter, has resumed an indefinite strike action after suspending an earlier industrial action in anticipation of government intervention.

‎The union disclosed that following a meeting with the Taraba State Government delegation on January 17, 2025, both parties reached an agreement on the implementation of the union’s demands. However, according to ASUU, the agreed resolutions have not been fulfilled.

‎In a statement issued to journalists in Jalingo on Wednesday and signed by the Union’s Chairman, Dr. Joshua Garba Mbave, the union explained that critical “grey areas” in the agreement remain unresolved despite multiple reminder letters sent to the state government.

‎The statement noted that the strike was initially suspended in good faith to allow the government sufficient time to address the issues.

‎“However, the government has failed to take concrete and verifiable steps toward fulfilling its obligations,” the statement read.

‎ASUU listed the major reasons for resuming the strike to include the absence of a functional pension scheme for university staff, non-payment of outstanding salary arrears, failure to settle accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and the non-implementation of the newly negotiated 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement.

‎Dr. Mbave stressed that the prolonged delay in resolving these concerns has negatively impacted staff welfare and morale, as well as the effective functioning of the university system.

‎He added that the decision to embark on the indefinite strike followed several unsuccessful rounds of dialogue with the state government, describing the action as a last resort.
