The Adamawa State House of Assembly on Monday passed a major social protection bill, setting the stage for the establishment of a legal framework to support vulnerable groups across the state.

‎The legislation, titled “A Bill for a Law to provide for Adamawa State Social Protection and for other matters incidental thereto,” successfully scaled third reading during plenary.

‎Sponsored by the Majority Leader, Hon. Mamuno Kate Raymond (Demsa), the bill seeks to institutionalise social protection programmes in Adamawa State. The proposed law is designed to strengthen mechanisms that cater to vulnerable populations, including women, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

With the third reading concluded, the bill will now be transmitted for assent in line with legislative procedure.

Meanwhile, Abubakar Abdullahi, member representing Girei Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Services, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter dated February 23, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Wurodole Ward in Girei Local Government Area, Abdullahi said his resignation takes immediate effect.

‎He attributed his decision to the persistent national crisis within the party, stating that the situation had made it difficult for him to remain a member in good conscience.

‎Abdullahi, who said he had served the PDP since 1998, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to the party’s development over the years. However, he noted that ongoing challenges affecting the party’s unity and direction at the national level compelled him to withdraw.

The development is expected to spark political reactions in Girei and across the state as observers await Abdullahi’s next political move.
